Long gone are the days of Mahathir touting The People’s Congress, Save Malaysia and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Those clever gimmicks were used to fire shots over Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Razak’s ship with the hope that one of those shots would cause Najib and thereby Barisan Nasional to sink.
However the Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional are still intact as Mahathir’s shots were as accurate as his calculation of those signatures he said he wanted to present to the Agong.
Nevertheless Tun Mahathir needed to continue to fire shots as he in addition to hoping to sink the Prime Minister, also wanted to show Lim Kit Siang and his DAP-led Pakatan that he was truly out to get Prime Minister Najib and thus they had the same cause.
Tun Mahathir had to as he says, Burn the bridges he had with UMNO. In that way he could work his way into in to the good graces of Lim Kit Siang and DAP-led Pakatan.
Mahathir had to burn his UMNO bridges because he knew that there would never be any hope of Mukhriz ever becoming Prime Minister had he just stayed within the political party.
Therefore Tun Mahathir tried his best to scorch the political terrain behind him and find another vehicle from which he could try to get his son Mukhriz back in the political game.
Without having a political base, the first thing Tun Mahathir had to do was form a new political party.
While he expected the government to make him a martyr by delaying or even preventing him from forming a new political party, the opposite happened as his Parti Pribumi Malaysia (PPBM) was registered without a hitch; thereby removing a Mahathir’s martyr card.
Tun Mahathir’s next move was to then bromance Lim Kit Siang to the point that the former (enemy) would allow him to join DAP-led Pakatan.
There is speculation that there was / is some backroom deal involving Lim Kit Siang and Tun Mahathir which the two (2) men hatched out of earshot of both PPBM and DAP-led Pakatan.
The plausibility of such a deal being true seemed real, as Lim Kit Siang while visually supporting Datuk Anwar Ibrahim was deftly silent when Tun Mahathir started offering himself as the DAP-led Pakatan opposition candidate.
Even after Anwar’s rebuke of Tun Mahathir….
The latter continued to offer up his services as DAP-led Pakatan’s choice for Prime Minister
Recently, Lim Kit Siang’s DAP Muslim mouthpiece Datuk Zaid Ibrahim also chimed in to say that PPBM should lead Pakatan.
Two thoughts come to mind:
- His promoting PPBM is an effort to throw the scent off for those who believe there is a deal between Lim Kit Siang and Tun Mahathir
- There really is a deal and Lim Kit Siang needs PPBM (Tun Mahathir) in place to make it come to fruition
Whichever the case, Tun Mahathir knows that it is GE14 or never for him to get Mukhriz in position to become Prime Minister.
That is why we are seeing a strong effort to force the bitter pill of Dr M down the DAP-led Pakatan coalition’s throats whether they like it or not!
