Pakatan Harapan and their Opposition cohorts have revived an almost an extinct form of entertainment; the circus.
For those who are too young to remember, years ago in the west the circus was a popular place to go to experience the strange and bazaar. There were usually three (3) tents where the ring master and performers were all vying for the attention of the attending audience.
Barnum knew that he could get the people to part with their money by providing the right mixture of the unusual. One of his famous quotes goes:
‘There is a sucker born every minute’
When we look at Pakatan Harapan (DAP, PKR, Amanah) as well as Tun Mahathir you will see that not much has changed since the days when Barnum and Bailey pulled into town with their assortment of tricksters, side show acts and other performers.
Only today the tents have given way to the media as people like Lim Kit Siang and Tun Mahathir try to be the ring masters and to enthrall the audience (rakyat) with their words and pontifications. As with the ring masters of old, those two old men try to get the audience to stare in a particular direction while the other performers are busily manipulating the scene out of eye’s sight.
Think over how Lim Kit Siang and Tun Mahathir have been trying to keep the audience’s attention fixed on either 1MDB (Tun Mahathir) or the PAS private member’s bill (Lim Kit Siang).
The two men (Tun Mahathir and Lim Kit Siang) kept up their attacks because they wanted the rakyat to actually believe that the narrative that they were giving was grounded in something other than wishful and fanciful thinking.
Remember, for Pakatan Harapan and their Opposition cohorts all of it is like a circus. There was the (former) deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin trying to walk across a tight rope with no safety net beneath him to break his fall in the event of the inevitable. And we are all witness to how that turned out; Splat. I think they are still picking up the pieces!
There was Mukhriz thinking that he could tame the big cats a la Sigmund and Roy. Like Roy, it did not turn out so well for Mukhriz either. Mukhriz eventually found himself on the outside of the political party looking in. Had it not been for his father’s (Tun Mahathir) gift, he would probably still be on the outside looking in with a deer caught in the headlights look in his eyes.
Others like Tony Pua, Lim Guan Eng and Amanah serve as the clowns that run here and there making noise whenever there is a camera or microphone available. The clown’s desire is for the people to take them serious, but really!
Look at Tony Pua; he is still trying to play up 1MDB even when Tun Mahathir has finally come to realize that clamoring on incessantly about it was a lost cause. And listen to Lim Guan Eng says that he did not know that he was getting the property at way below market price; does he really think those outside of his circle believes that.
Amanah rounded out the clown entourage when they paraded around in the bright orange outfits. That is probably the sacrifice they were forced to makes when dancing to their owner’s tune! As they say; he who controls the purse strings chooses the tune or in the case the color!
In reality, it does not matter how Pakatan Harapan and all try to dress up their circus as its sole purpose is to separate the rakyat from their vote. So even with all of their pseudo display of doing ‘it’ for the rakyat, Pakatan Harapan and Tun Mahathir are operating with their own objectives firmly in mind. And when it comes to trying to win over the rakyat they are of the Barnum school of thought; ‘There is a sucker born every minute’
