Recently Tun Mahathir has said that if Pribumi wins GE14 then former deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be the Prime Minister. (here)
From his statement Tun Mahathir is insinuating that Pribumi, the still wet behind the ears, upstart 10 to 40 member new political party can do better in the upcoming election than DAP led Pakatan Harapan and all those political parties under its umbrella. It could be that Tun Mahathir based his assessment on the fact that Pakatan Harapan received a political bloody nose in the past three (3) elections.
Of course at that time Tun Mahathir was snuggling up close to Lim Kit Siang and Pakatan Harapan because he wanted to use their voter base as a platform in which he could launch his son Mukhriz back into the political spotlight. However, the thrashing that Pakatan Harapan received at the polls squelched any chance of that taking place. As a result Tun Mahathir had to come up with another platform that he could not only use to try and make Mukhriz relevant, but also a party in which he could control; it was probably those factors which gave rise to Parti Pribumi Bersatu or ‘Pribumi’ for short.
Mahathir saw that there was no chance that he could hijack Pakatan Harapan as Lim Kit Siang and his DAP party would never go along with such a takeover move on Mahathir’s part. Apparently it is one thing to be in bed with Mahathir and another thing to wake up next to him daily and have to serve him breakfast in bed!
Beyond the whole creating a platform for Mukhriz scenario; it seems that the initial function of Pribumi was to get some type of reaction or backlash from UMNO. However, there were no attempts from government bodies to hinder the registration of Pribumi in any manner. Tun Mahathir was probably hoping that there would be interference so that he could lament that the government was preventing them (Pribumi) from being able to compete politically. However, with no hindrance Tun Mahathir could not use that issue against the government.
So now Mahathir is stuck with a political party that has no raison d’être. Pribumi is like the recently dropped civil lawsuit; it never really had a purpose for existing other than serving as a publicity stunt. But since Tun Mahathir owns the cow (Pribumi) he is trying to milk it as much as possible.
That brings us again to his statement that if his upstart Pribumi wins the election he will choose former deputy Prime Minster Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the Prime Minister.
Do you venture to guess who his choice is for deputy Prime Minister?
For Tun Mahathir to make such a statement it means that he is certain that the DAP led Opposition can perform no better than they had in the past three (3) elections and that even a newly formed political party party like Pribumi could do better than Pakatan Harapan them in GE14!
