Tun Mahathir has said recently that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should not gloat over the results of the June 18th Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections. (here)
He attributes the Team Barisan Nasional win to campaign promises and other such goodies for the people. It seems that Tun Mahathir would have much more preferred for the ‘wining candidates’ to carry the same doom and spill that has become his (Tun Mahathir) and Pakatan Harapan’s trade mark!
The people evidently decided to choose a comfortable vehicle that would take them from their present position to one that is even brighter. Pakatan Harapan (DAP, PKR, Amanah et al) along with Tun Mahathir’s Opposition vehicle was noisy, uncomfortable and unreliable as it has proven to frequently breakdown. These breakdowns were largely attributed to Pakatan Harapan not being able to resolve its own issues and not being clear on how to navigate into the future.
Of course Mahathir cannot say too much along those lines as he was brought in to be the ‘shinning knight’ that would save the day. Instead, he (Tun Mahathir) turned out to largely be the Emperor who did not have any clothes!
Tun Mahathir while he suggests that Prime Minister Najib Razak should not gloat over the by election results would have like nothing better than for the election shoe to have been on the other foot putting him in the position to gloat. Had he won instead of loss his popularity referendum, Tun Mahathir would have convened a news conference where he would have done nothing other than gloat on how he is more popular than the Prime Minister.
He (Tun Mahathir) would have been gloating even if he had won by a single vote! Yet, with the by-election votes being more than that, he (Tun Mahathir) is trying unsuccessfully to give the impression that the win is numerically insignificant! In his blog he or his people go so far as to give vote tabulations for both Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar in an effort to diminish Team Barisan Nasional’s win.
Had Tun Mahathir been this meticulous with the signatures he begged for, he would have realized that he did not have the 1.2 million that he gloated he had!
Tun Mahathir was denied the chance to gloat following the election in Sarawak and more recently in the twin by-elections. For a man who is used to having praise and adoration heaped upon him for his political savvy, this deluge of losses has to have his ego in uncharted territory. Now with his son (Mukhriz) and proxy PM (Muhyiddin) out of the Barisan Nasional picture, he (Tun Mahathir) is in a race before GE14 to find his political bearings and his options it appears are dwindling.
After Tun Mahathir actively working with Pakatan Harapan, the way back to Barisan Nasional seems to border on the impossible and for him to join PKR would mean to be under the man (no pun intended) who once served as his second in command.
Becoming and an outright card carrying member of the DAP would place Tun Mahathir in a vulnerable position as they (DAP) would ridicule him in much the same way as Samson in the Torah was ridicules after his enemies had blinded him!
Of course joining Amanah would be tantamount to being in a subservient position and at the beck and call of the DAP, which again is something that Tun Mahathir would not accept for himself and would not want for his son.
So other than having Mukhriz being back on track to be PM; having his own political party is the one avenue that would give Tun Mahathir a symbolic victory. A new party with 1.2 million instantaneous members (moved from Save Malaysia) would allow him to claim that there are more with him than those which delivered Team Barisan Nasional victories in the Sungai Besar Kuala Kangsar by-elections. Therefore by virtue of the numbers (real or fictitious), he has won the popularity referendum the sole right to gloat!
